Lying on the East China seaboard where the Yellow River empties into the sea, Shandong Province forms a part of a large peninsula that thrusts far out into the Yellow Sea. Shandong has played a very important role in the prosperity and development of Chinese civilization for being the birthplace of Confucius and Confucianism philosophy. Located on the side of Baotu Spring Park in the capital city Jinan, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University is a major general teaching hospital, and performs a comprehensive role in medical service, teaching, scientific research and preventive care. Since established in 1890 by an American couple (Mr. James Royl Neal and his wife) invited by the Presbyterian Church of North America, QH of SDU was once named as Huamei Hospital, Gonghe Hospital, Qilu Hospital, the Second Provincial Hospital of Shandong, the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Medical College and the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Medical University respectively. In October 2000, it was officially renamed as Qilu Hospital of Shandong University.

Qilu Hospital of Shandong University currently provides more than 3,000 inpatient beds. All the medical indicators including technology of diagnosis and treatment stand amongst the top of domestic hospitals. In 2011, the numbers of outpatients, inpatients and operations were respectively: 2,077,799; 78,049; and, 36,613. QH of SDU possesses 62 clinical departments with 2 national disciplines, 1 ministerial and provincial key laboratory, 11 national key constructing disciplines, 5 key ministry-level laboratories, 8 provincial disciplines, and 3 provincial clinical medical centers. There are 624 professors and associated professors, 1 National Innovative Research Team, 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 scholar listed in the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 3 scholars listed in Cheung Kong Scholar Program, 1 winner of the National Outstanding Youth Foundation Award, and 76 beneficiaries of the Special Government Subsidy. Currently, 29 hospital staff are among the editorial board as vice-editors or board members for a variety of national-level academic journals. In addition, 20 staff hold positions at the Chinese Medical Association, as chair, vice chair or committee members.

During the past century, due to the collaborative efforts of generation by generation, a number of departments in QH have gained outstanding clinical status in specialized areas including, Cardiovascular, Hematology, OB/GYN, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Pediatrics. Meanwhile, QH has fostered a host of internationally renowned specialists who enjoy a high reputation in and out of China for advancing our medical care and public health.'

QH of SDU runs first-level discipline programs for Shandong University doctoral-degree-conferring specialties, with 133 PhD and 245 Master candidate supervisors. The hospital shoulders the responsibility of offering clinical teaching, clinical internship and placements for medical students at varied levels including Bachelor, Masters, seven-year combined Bachelor and Master, and PhD candidates. It also serves as a base for standardized training for residents and advanced physicians. Gynaecology and Obstetrics, as well as Bioethics, both edited by the hospital staff, are selected as 11th Five-year Project national textbooks. The following courses, Diagnosis and Bioethics are awarded as national classic courses, and Gynaecology and Obstetrics, as well as Surgery, as provincial classics. The hospital also runs three peer-reviewed academic journals including, Current Advance in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Chinese Journal of Current Advance in General Surgery, and the Journal of Laparoscopic Surgery.

Through ongoing effort to boost innovative expertise, the hospital continues to strengthen and improve its medical research. There have been 178 national-level science projects undertaken by the hospital staff since 2007. During this period, there are a range of other projects granted, including 3 projects of 863 Program and 973 Program , 9 projects of Ministry of Science & Technology and Ministry of Public Health, and 424 other projects at provincial and ministry-level. There are in total, 720 papers written by hospital staff which have been published in SCI journals between the years of 2006 and 2010. During 2011 there were 178 papers published within this year alone. There have been 43 research projects in 2010 and 62 projects in 2011 that have got grant funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, which totaled over RMB 55.51 million just in 2011. The amount of grant funded projects and general grants awarded ranks us top among domestic medical institutes in China.

For years, the hospital has adopted an open strategy in its management, striving to provide quality medical services to a larger population as well as to achieve further collectivized development through share holding, trusteeship and technology transfer. It has become the holding hospital of five branch hospitals, namely, People's Hospital of Pingyi County, People's Hospital of Yinan County, Jinan High-Tech Industrial Development Zone Hospital, People's Hospital of Huantai County and People's Hospital of Donggang District, Rizhao. It has obtained the trusteeship of Jinan Children's Hospital and Jining No. 2 Hospital. As a result, a medical group has been formed with Qilu Hospital as its nucleus together with thorough technology support and cooperation networks at both provincial and national levels.
